Just in time for warmer weather, beloved Portland-based ice cream parlor, Salt & Straw, is making its Texas debut in Dallas with a second DFW location on the near horizon.
Salt & Straw is an artisanal ice cream company based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2011 by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek, the ice cream shop began as a humble pushcart in Northeast Portland. Word spread of their eccentric flavors, like the strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper, ultimately leading to the two opening their first brick-and-mortar.
Today, the ice cream shop has numerous locations across multiple states – including Los Angeles, New York, and Miami. This May, Salt & Straw is opening two locations in DFW, starting with their Dallas shop on Friday, May 15, followed by a Fort Worth location opening a week later in Fort Worth.

Despite the ice cream shop’s expansion, Salt & Straw has maintained a local ethos. In addition to making a concerted effort to establish community connections in respected markets, Salt & Straw collaborates with local farmers, chefs, and culinary artisans.
Part of the secret to its success is the shop’s ice cream base, a decadent, butter-fat-rich cream sourced from a fifth-generation, family-owned dairy. Through which, Salt & Straw churns out incredibly delightful and inventful flavors.
In addition to its monthly rotating menu, the ice cream shop features a selection of mainstays that include such options as Pear and Blue Cheese, Arbequina Olive Oil, and the aforementioned Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper.
The shop also carries a number of slightly less adventurous but just as tasty flavors like its Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough; Double Fold Vanilla, and Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons — the latter, created by the James Beard Award-winning Mark Bitterman.

Salt & Straw also offers a number of vegan and dairy-free options that include the Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip and Hazelnut Cookies & Cream.
For its Texas outposts, the ice cream shop plans to debut Lonestar-specific flavors that include a Fritos pie sundae, cream cheese jalapeno jelly ice cream, and paloma sherbet.
The ice cream shop also makes its own waffle cones.
Salt & Straw opens on Friday, May 15, at 2323 N. Henderson Ave. On May 22, Salt & Straw opens at 1305 W. Magnolia Ave. in Fort Worth.
