We have eaglets! Beloved White Rock Lake Bald Eagle couple affectionately known as Nick and Nora have reportedly hatched a pair of baby eagles.
Bald Eagles in White Rock
The bald eagle couple in White Rock Lake area of Dallas were first sited back in late 2021. Named after characters in the 1934 novel The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett, the couple first attempted to nest in the Sunset Bay area, though the nest and their eggs were ultimately destroyed by high winds in February 2022.
The eagles would reattempt to next near Dixon Branch later that year. Around this time last year, Nick and Nora birthed two baby eagles; however, a storm in May would destroy the nest, displace the eagles, and lose one of the eaglets.
Thankfully, the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, would rescue and rehabilitate the other and introduce the eaglet to its parents in June 2024.
A New Hope
Over the past month or so, birders and wildlife advocates noticed particular nesting behavior of the bald eagles – leading them to believe that they had laid eggs. As of yesterday evening, sitings confirmed that the eagles had hatched two eaglets.
While the news of the hatching eaglets is grand to all of us, it makes the us all the more nervous that it comes amid windy weather. If all goes well, however, the two eaglets should start their flight training by the summer.
Is there a 24/7 Livestream of the White Rock Lake Eagles?
While previous entities such as the Dallas Academy previously set up live cams of the White Rock Lake bald eagles, there are presently no live cameras set up on the eagle family in the area. There is however, a dedicated Facebook page for fans of the White Rock Lake bald eagles where photos and videos are uploaded.
If you’re interested in other bald eagle families across the continent, you can check out the Big Bear bald eagles livestream here, or the deceptively-similar White Rock eagles cam, which is live-streaming a family of eagles in the Vancouver area.
