Jazz is a journey, peppered with influences from genres that came before and still flavouring others. Believed to have been born in the vibrant city of New Orleans, it can trace its roots to ragtime and blues, reflecting the unfathomable experience of slavery. Out of these dark times sprung an art form that endures, inspires and will come to life at a Candlelight Jazz Week tribute to this great genre as Jazz Day commences on April 30.
The glorious Jazz Age, otherwise known as The Roaring Twenties has been immortalised by both music and literature. So, it fits that Dallas’ Candlelight Jazz concert will take place at the glamorous Edison’s. This showstopping venue is known for its two rooms – ‘The Bentley’ and ‘The Gatsby’. Could that be any more perfect? As talented musicians play, this 1920s-style space will be illuminated by the glow of thousands of candles, making it even more magical.
Candlelight tribute to the best of Frank Sinatra & Nat King Cole
A fantastic Candlelight concert paying tribute to two Jazz greats, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, will celebrate their larger-than-life legacies. Care to croon? They certainly did, with those soft, comforting and soul-stirring vocals. While Nat King Cole started his career as a pianist and Sinatra was always a vocalist, the two inspired one another. Now two powerhouses will meet as the incredible Lydian Blue Jazz Band revel in recreating their greatest hits.
Included in the concert are songs with an incredibly powerful cultural and social significance. You’ll hear the likes of ‘Stardust’, a song written by Hoagy Carmichael that made its way into the Grammy Hall of Fame when sung by Nat King Cole. Plus, Sinatra’s cinematic masterpieces like ‘New York, New York’ from the hit film of the same name and the iconic ‘My Way’. ‘Autumn Leaves’ meets ‘Strangers in the Night’ as the songs of two unforgettable artists make their mark on Candlelight Concerts.
Jazz stands as a symbol of the resilience and defiance of marginalised communities in the United States. It’s a sensation, not just a genre, painting a musical picture of the human condition. For 60 soul-stirring minutes, you can hear talented musicians move the room with songs that have been popular for generations. Bring your friends, family, partner and most importantly yourself to hear these incomparable tunes like never before, surrounded by a sea of candles!
