The Yelp has spoken. In its 2025 edition of the Top 100 Sandwich Shops in America, Yelp ranked the best sandwiches state-by-state, including delis, cafes, and hoagie havens making the best subs, hoagies, and sandwiches in the U.S. Breaking the top 10 is Hugs Cafe in McKinney.
Located in McKinney’s downtown square, Hugs Cafe is an incredible sandwich shop with a purpose. For the past decade, the sub shop has employed those with intellectual and development needs as a non-profit that creates simple and scratch-made sandwiches for North Texas fans.
Hugs, which stands for Hope, Understanding, Grace, and Success, also offers a variety of training programs to help those with development needs to learn how to work in the culinary industry and develop other life skills.
Here’s what Yelp had to say about Hugs Cafe:
“The menu is simple, seasonal, and scratch-made. Yelpers rave about the popular Peach Gobbler, which marries a homemade peach chutney (“a unique twist”) with fresh turkey, bacon, and cheddar cheese,” the page writes.
“The “excellent” PBLT elevates the beloved bacon-lettuce-tomato with Hugs’ own Southern pimento cheese spread. ‘I like that they really load their sandwiches with meat,’ says Yelp Elite Tiffany T. But what really makes Hugs special is the ‘love and positivity you feel when you walk through the door,’ where Yelpers love to see the warm and patient interactions between staff and employees.”
Additionally, the restaurant’s spring menu features the likes of a 4 Cheese Grilled Cheese, Monte Cristo, and Cranberry Chickie Hug made with cranberry and pecan chicken topped with mixed greens.
Hugs Cafe also serves breakfast, with a lineup of egg sandwiches, breakfast burritos, muffins, and egg-based dishes. For dessert, Hugs Cafe offers Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie and an assortment of cookies.
Hugs Cafe also plans to open a location in Dallas proper later this year!
Hugs Cafe is located at 224 E Virginia St. The restaurant is open from 8 am to 3 pm Tuesday through Sunday. Hugs Cafe is closed on Mondays.
