The Dallas Mavericks have formally announced plans to relocate from downtown Dallas. The organization confirmed it has entered into option agreements to purchase approximately 104 acres at the former Valley View Mall site, where it will relocate following the expiration of its lease with American Airlines Center.
Why The Valley View Mall Site?
The organization selected the Valley View location over other potential options, including the Dallas City Hall site. For the past two years, Mavericks CEO and governor Rick Welts and Patrick Dumont have been insistent that the arena remains in Dallas city limits.
Located about 10 miles north of Downtown Dallas, the former Valley View Mall ceased operations in 2021 and was completely demolished in 2023.
The relocation is driven by the upcoming expiration of the Mavericks’ lease at the American Airlines Center (AAC) in 2031. Mavericks CEO Rick Welts previously noted that securing a site by July was necessary to ensure the construction process is completed before the 2031 deadline.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert also released a joint statement applauding the organization’s continued commitment to the city:

What To Expect From The New Development
Per a Mavericks statement, the proposed 104-acre development is planned as a mixed-use entertainment district. The project will be anchored by a new, state-of-the-art basketball arena, moving the team out of its long-standing downtown location.
“”We have the opportunity to create a vibrant mixed-use destination anchored by a state-of-the-art arena, along with restaurants, entertainment options, public green spaces and family-friendly experiences,” said the organization in a statement.
“Done thoughtfully and with community engagement, a project of this scale will serve as a meaningful economic catalyst for Dallas and its residents.”
The End Of An Era At The AAC
The move will conclude the Mavericks’ tenure at the AAC, where they have played since relocating from Reunion Arena over 20 years ago. The departure also leaves questions regarding the arena’s co-tenant, the Dallas Stars. The NHL franchise is currently evaluating its own future options, including remaining at the AAC or constructing a new arena in Dallas or its surrounding suburbs.
