The Texas Bowl Has Been Canceled

The Mercari Texas Bowl will not be happening this year.

The college football match-up between the Arkansas Razorbacks and the TCU Horned Frogs slated for New Year’s Eve at nrg stadium in Houston has been called off due to an increased number of positive COVID-19 tests according the event organizers.

A couple of months after the pandemic, the NHL and NBA gave sports fans hope after returning and successfully closing out their seasons safely and without obstruction. The success of the two leagues gave hope to sports organizations and fans throughout the country that despite the circumstances, the show would go on.

Unfortunately, the circumstances surrounding the pandemic have only worsened since then; positive tests have increased with both fans and athletes alike. And while attendance is still permitted in arenas throughout the country, no fan nor athlete, coach, or trainer will be allowed into the NRG Stadium on New Year’s Eve.

In a recent Twitter post, Mercari Texas Bowl stated that the game would be cancelled due to “an increased number of positive COVID-19 tests and other circumstances within the TCU football program.”

“While we are disappointed in canceling this year’s game, we look forward to hosting both the Texas Kickoff and Texas Bowl next season,” executive director, David Fletcher, was quoted in the post. “We appreciate everyone’s support, including our new title sponsor, Mercari.”

Organizers have announced that tickets would be refunded and processed through the outlet of purchase, such as Lone Star Sports & Entertainment and Ticketmaster.
