The history of jazz in the city was written in the vibrant clubs of Deep Ellum, where legends like Blind Lemon Jefferson and T-Bone Walker helped shape the scene. Today, the tradition continues with spots like the Balcony Club or events like “The Jazz Room” in Dallas. Featuring a smokin’ local jazz band that will recreate iconic hits, such as “On The Sunny Side Of The Street” and “Stella by Starlight”, the show is a celebration of jazz in all its expressions.
And it doesn’t end there. Expect to also hear instrumental improvisations that really define the genre. The performance takes place at Edison’s on Cockrell Avenue. Places are limited so don’t wait too long to secure your tickets.
What is “The Jazz Room”?
Immerse yourself in “The Jazz Room”, a 60-minute spectacle that captures the essence of this complex and spirited genre. Talented musicians and vocalists work their magic on a stage that evokes a 1920s New Orleans street-style bar, transporting guests to another era.
The experience features a curated set of popular cool jazz, swing and bebop hits, including Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island”, as well as fiery improvised solos, all designed to create an evening of sophisticated fun.
Jazz, its story and the show
Jazz originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Louisiana, a melting pot of African, Caribbean, and European cultures. Stemming from African-American communities, its roots lie in work songs, blues, and ragtime. The genre’s complex improvisations and off-beat rhythms create a unique sound that invites listeners to swing, sway, and lose themselves in the music.
“The Jazz Room” brings classics by legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller to the stage, also including soulful renditions of “Georgia On My Mind” and “All Of Me”, setting the mood with soft lighting and the option to enjoy a cool drink, creating a sensational jazz experience for everyone.
Jazz drummer Art Blakey said that the genre “washes away the dust of everyday life”. If your life feels a bit dull and you’re looking for a groovy escape, look no further than “The Jazz Room” in Dallas.
Taking place at Edison’s on selected dates, there will be two performances each evening at 06:30 pm and 9:00 pm. Tickets are sold in categories depending on the proximity to the stage and seating is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
