What is Operation Slowdown?
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is collaborating with local law enforcement agencies, including the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, to launch the annual “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign. Also known as Operation Slowdown, this statewide initiative focuses on public education and speed enforcement to emphasize the physical dangers and financial consequences of speeding.
“Speeding is the leading factor in deadly crashes, accounting for roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities statewide. In 2025, speeding played a role in more than 150,000 traffic crashes in Texas, resulting in 1,247 fatalities and 5,652 serious injuries,” TxDOT reports.

Motorists should expect a significant increase in law enforcement presence throughout the campaign. Agencies will intensify their patrols to target speeding and aggressive driving. In addition to issuing citations, police vehicles will actively pace traffic by driving the exact posted speed limits, serving as a physical demonstration of safe driving practices.
When is Operation Slowdown in Texas?
According to TxDOT, the Operation Slowdown campaign will run statewide from July 18 through August 2, 2026.

Due to the increased enforcement protocols of Operation Slowdown, motorists can expect a highly visible police presence on major Dallas thoroughfares. Commuters are highly likely to encounter additional patrol units on key highways, including I-35E, US 75, and the Dallas North Tollway.
