Texas is a heavy hitter when it comes to natural wonders, from the desert peaks of Big Bend to the depths of the Sonora Caverns. But for those of us in North Texas, the “great outdoors” just got a massive upgrade. For the first time in over 25 years, the Lone Star State has debuted a brand-new playground: Palo Pinto Mountains State Park.
Located just 75 miles west of Fort Worth in the charming town of Strawn, this 4,871-acre gem officially opened its gates on March 1, 2026. Whether you’re a hiker, a paddler, or just someone looking to escape the Dallas concrete, here is everything you need to know about our newest backyard retreat.
A Decade in the Making
This wasn’t an overnight success story. The park began over 10 years ago with the purchase of 3,000 acres of private ranch land. After years of meticulous planning, fundraising, and trail-blazing by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD), the undulating juniper hills of North Central Texas are finally ready for their close-up.
