Mapping out your summer hotspots? Add this to the list: Ray Roberts Lake State Park is a sprawling 3,777-acre state park centered around the 29,000-acre Lake Roberts. As one of Texas’ most visited state parks, Ray Roberts Lake State Park offers endless swimming, hiking, and outdoor fun.
Named for former U.S. Congressman, Herbert Ray Roberts, the state park is a premier summer destination for swimmers seeking respite from the sun.
Isle du Bois
The most popular area is Isle du Bois, translating to “Island of the Trees”. Located on the south shore of Ray Roberts Lake, Isle du Bois is also the most developed portion of the state park.
The isle is considered the main family hub of the park, the area is resplendent with amenities that include an expansive, sandy beach, kids’ fishing pond, and hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. The area also features showers, restrooms, and over 200 campsites – including RV, equestrian, primitive tent, and group camping sites. Camping is priced at $25 a night.
For swimmers, officials have a designated, roped-off area off the shore. Visitors can also opt to paddleboard, kayak, or otherwise at the lake. There is no lifeguard on duty – so swim at your own risk.
Other activities at Ray Roberts Lake State Park
In addition to swimming, the park is home to an extensive trail system. Along the Greenbelt Corridor, off the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, visitors can take to 20 miles of multi-use trails.
The Greenbelt Corridor also offers opportunities for paddling trips on the Trinity River. Kayak, canoe, and paddleboards are available for rent.
Alternatively, Johnson Branch on the western shore of Lake Ray Roberts, offers a more secluded, wooded area for hikers, bikers, and backpackers. Johnson Branch also features over 100 campsites as well as ample swimming opportunities.

Isle du Bois is located at 100 PW 4137, Pilot Point, TX 76258. Admission is priced at $7 for adults (13+), free for kids 12 and under. The park is open from 6 am – 10 pm daily.
