Plano has been named as the second safest major city in the country in a new study.
In a follow-up to its America’s Safest Midsize Cities study, SmartAsset analyzed 83 U.S. cities with populations of 250,000 or greater to identify the safest large cities in the nation.
The financial technology company evaluated more than 90% of America’s major municipalities, ranking them using a composite score based on violent crime rates, property crime rates, traffic fatalities, and natural disaster risk.
Through its study, SmartAsset found Plano to be the second safest major city in the country. Ranked just behind Virginia Beach, Virginia, Plano scored very low violent crime and property crime rates, plus a relatively low traffic-death rate.
Additionally, the study found the city to have 1.5 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, 14.7 property crimes per 1,000 residents, and 6.9 traffic deaths per 100,000 residents; its one weaker spot was a relatively high natural-disaster risk.
At large, Texas made for a mixed bag. Out of the 12 Texas cities evaluated in the rankings, the Lone Star State stands out as the only state represented in both extremes: with Plano (No, 2) and Laredo (No. 6) ranking among the 10 safest cities, while Dallas and Houston falling into the 10 least safe cities in the country – with Houston ranked as the second least safe major city in the country, and Dallas ranked at No. 11 of least safe major cities.
According to the study, the least safe major city in the country is Memphis, Tennessee. For more details, you can see the full study at this link here.
