Following the opening of Chicago’s famed Portillo’s in Dallas, it appears that another famed Chicago establishment is coming to Texas.
Architectural Artifacts is an iconic antique emporium and Chicago institution that’s been serving the community for the past 37 years. It is now preparing to leave its renowned Chicago location, but this time, it’s packing up to move to Texas.
Stuart Grannen, the owner of Architectural Artifacts and the country’s top treasurologist, recently stated that the extensive antique emporium will conclude its operations on Monday, April 15th, marking the conclusion of a 37-year legacy in Chicago.
“It is with a heavy heart and a warm smile that I make this announcement…It has been a truly extraordinary 37 years in Chicago for Architectural Artifacts and myself. I have grown the business and grown personally in many ways. Some needed, some fun, some painful, but always with the idea to move forward,” said Grannen.
“Thank you from my heart to all of our customers, vendors, friends, and fans. I will still have a foot or two in Chicago so please stay tuned for what is next. As always, I have some plans and surprises up my sleeve.”
Originally opened in an 80,000-square-foot former factory in Ravenswood in 1987, Stuart Grannen later relocated Architectural Artifacts to a repurposed school building at 1065 N. Orleans in 2022. Throughout his tenure in Chicago, Grannen has successfully sold over 100,000 items.
The array of unique items traded under Grannen’s ownership spans “from a Louis Sullivan-designed elevator surround from the Chicago Stock Exchange to a complete terra cotta facade from the Sheridan Theatre to a granite folly from St Andrews, Scotland to marble tables and benches from the Bank of France” as per a press release.
Looking ahead, Architectural Artifacts is set to establish its new base in Round Top, Texas, where an original 1880s cowboy saloon, dance hall, and farmhouse, accompanied by three acres of land, will become its home. The upcoming space is designed to host an impressive antiques gallery, complete with live music, as well as food and beverage offerings.
Architectural Artifacts will continue to operate at 1065 N. Orleans in Chicago, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Monday, April 15th.
