While we here are aware of the unparalleled excellence of Dallas, what with all the amazing restaurants, bar, and events – it seems that it’s no longer a secret. The U.S Census Bureau published a recent report that revealed that Dallas and Houston topped the list of the largest growing counties in the United States.
According to a recent publication by the U.S. Census Bureau, Dallas witnessed the highest increase in population nationally between 2022 and 2023 followed by Houston.
The report disclosed that a majority of U.S. counties (60%) saw a rise in population between 2022 and 2023, up from 52% in the previous year.
Population gains or losses were attributed to factors such as domestic migration, international migration, and natural changes, as highlighted in the report.
The report indicates that Texas dominated the list, with 8 out of the top 10 counties experiencing the highest numeric growth. Harris County, located in Houston, claimed the top spot as the fastest-growing county in the nation, boasting an increase of 53,788 residents. Following closely were Collin County in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Montgomery County in Florida.
Other Texas counties contributing significantly to the population surge between 2022 and 2023 include Denton, Fort Bend, Bexar, Tarrant, and Williamson.
“The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX metro area surpassed 8 million residents between 2022 and 2023, adding 152,598 residents for a total population of 8,100,037,” the report reads.
“This was the largest numeric population increase of any U.S. metro area between 2022 and 2023, followed by Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX, which added 139,789 over the same period, bringing its total population to 7,510,253.”
Denton County in Texas achieved a significant milestone by reaching a population of 1 million residents, becoming the seventh county in the state to do so, following a growth of 30,000 new residents.
Among counties with populations exceeding 20,000, Lassen County in California experienced the most rapid population decline in 2023, with a decrease of 3.9%. This was followed by Randolph County in Missouri and Bronx County in New York.
Los Angeles County in California witnessed the largest population decrease between 2022 and 2023, with a decline of 56,420 residents. Following California, New York counties including Queens, Kings, and Bronx experienced notable declines, attributed to negative domestic migration according to the report.
