It’s hardly unexpected that H-E-B has once again claimed the top spot in the yearly national supermarket ranking. In the latest edition of dunnhumby’s annual grocery ranking, the Texas-based supermarket chain outperformed competitors such as Amazon and Costco.
Tracing its roots back to 1905 as a small, family-owned grocery store in Kerrville, Texas, H-E-B has transformed into the most beloved supermarket chain in the local area. While it’s customary to admire H-E-B in the Lone Star State, it’s gratifying when this grocery chain earns well-deserved recognition on a national scale.
Known as the “global leader in customer data science” dunnhumby has recently released its seventh annual Retailer Preference Index (RPI). Based on RPI, dunnhumby has assessed and ranked 65 retailers in the industry, considering a blend of financial performance and customer perceptions related to quality, speed, convenience, digital experience, operations, pricing, promotions, and rewards.
The group emphasizes that the survey identifies retailers best positioned for the future and provides reasons for their favorable positioning.
The top 5 on the list are as follows:
1) H-E-B
2) Amazon
3) Costco Wholesale
4) Market Basket
5) Sam’s Club
This is the third instance in which the study has ranked H-E-B as the leading national retail grocer since its initiation in 2018. Regarding the key to H-E-B’s success, the study highlights the retailer’s capability to “deliver a combination of better savings and better experience/assortment, supported by time savings through superior digital capabilities.”
In comparison to Amazon, which secured the second position on the list, H-E-B surpassed the online giant in the two crucial indicators: quality and the combination of price, promotions, and rewards.
The study also underscores the contribution of H-E-B in supporting and giving back to the local community: “H-E-B is Texas, so laser focused on the state and the communities in it that it get top marks for localization of the assortment and local community connection.”
