In recognition of the Academy Award-winning, Texas-born actor, the Texas-founded Alamo Drafthouse is officially changing the name of its Mueller theater in East Austin to the “Matthew McConaughey Cinema.” An official dedication ceremony is scheduled for next week and will feature an early screening of McConaughey’s latest film.
“We can confirm, Alamo Drafthouse Mueller will officially become the Matthew McConaughey Cinema, a celebration of the actor, producer, proud Texan, and all-around Austin-icon,” Alamo Drafthouse wrote in an Instagram post.
“From his immortal arrival in DAZED AND CONFUSED to the cosmic emotional wallop of INTERSTELLAR, and the hard-won humanity of DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, McConaughey has always brought a little Texas to the screen. Born in Uvalde and forged in Austin at the University of Texas, he’s traveled just about everywhere a movie career can take you without ever losing his connection to Austin”.
Alamo Drafthouse will host an official dedication ceremony on Monday, August 10, featuring a special early screening of McConaughey’s latest film, The Rivals of Amziah King. The actor will introduce the movie himself, followed by a post-screening Q&A with director Andrew Patterson and lead actress Angelina LookingGlass.
Although the dedication ceremony is private, Alamo Drafthouse locations nationwide will host “Cocktail Party” screenings of The Rivals of Amziah King. Participating theaters will serve the “King’s Sting,” a themed, honey-infused Pantalones Organic Tequila cocktail, and provide guests with a take-home cocktail kit and recipe card.
Among the cinemas participating in the cocktail party screenings of the film include the Alamo Drafthouse at 3220 Town Center Trail, Denton, TX 76201 on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at approximately 6:30 pm.
The to-be-named Matthew McConaughey Cinema is located at 1911 Aldrich St #120 in Austin.
Described as an American neo-Western crime thriller set in Oklahoma, The Rivals of Amziah King stars McConaughey, Angelina LookingGlass, and Kurt Russell. It will have a limited theatrical release on August 14, followed by a nationwide rollout on August 21.
