The proposed train route from Dallas to Houston might still be up in the air, but more adventurous prospects are currently in development. While there are plenty of local Texas destinations that are certainly worth a visit, a proposed new train routes from Dallas to Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Atlanta could whisk Dallasites to more far away places.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is presently in the Route Identification phase – third phase of a four-phase program. Expanding the Amtrak network, the initiative seeks to explore the country’s skeletal long-distance passenger train network by adding over 20,000 miles of restored and/or adapted old routes.
Through this study, the company is reportedly seeking to add a new train route from Dallas to Miami, New York, and Atlanta. The proposal would see daily service between the cities operating via a Amtrak route discontinued in 1979.
Included in the proposal is a train route from Dallas/Fort Worth to Miami. This route would operate on a connection between Dallas and Marshall, Marshall to New Orleans, New Orleans to Penascola, Penascola to Tallahassee, Tallahassee to Jacksonville, then finally from Jacksonville to Miami. The proposed trip would operate on routes discontinued as far back as 1961.
Numerous routes to and from Dallas are also included in the proposal, including routes from Dallas to Atlanta, New York, and San Francisco – the latter features stops in El Paso, Tuscon, Barstow, Bakersfield, and Merced.
Amtrak presently offers a number of trips out of Dallas/Fort Worth via the Texas Eagle line. Through this line, passengers can book trips to Austin, San Marcos, St. Louis, Springfield, Chicago, Tuscon, and Los Angeles.
Other proposed routes out of Texas include a railway from San Antonio to Minneapolis/St. Paul, from Houston to Denver, and from Houston to New York.
